About the Neighborhood

Located 23 miles north of Chicago’s Loop, the thriving City of Highland Park hugs the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. Highland Park is nestled among ravines, wildflowers and carefully preserved open space. The city is home to top-notch schools, businesses and recreational areas. Easy access to a major expressway, an Illinois tollway and O’Hare International Airport make Highland Park a very desirable address. A major cultural attraction, the Ravinia Park outdoor performing arts venue attracts more than 500,000 attendees during the summer festival season.

Transportation

Commuters to downtown Chicago can board the Metra Union Pacific North Line (UP-N) at the Braeside, Ravinia Park, Ravinia or Highland Park stations in Highland Park. (Trains stop at the Ravinia Park station only during the concert season.) Plus, the neighboring community of Highwood has two additional Metra stations that are close to Highland Park residents: the Highwood and Fort Sheridan stations. Pace offers several bus routes as well. Major highways include U.S. 41, which connects Chicago to Milwaukee, and the nearby I-94 (Edens Expressway).

Things to Do

The Ravinia Festival is the highlight of the summer, hosting classical, pop and jazz concerts. Concertgoers can purchase tickets for seats in the covered pavilion or on the expansive lawn. Visitors often picnic on the lawn before and during the concerts. Downtown Highland Park is a vibrant shopping district with a variety of excellent restaurants, upscale shops and businesses. The Park District of Highland Park maintains natural areas and park facilities, including four public beaches that provide access to the magnificent Lake Michigan shoreline here. Residents enjoy the outdoors in more than 250 acres of prairie, woodlands, ravines and wetlands. In winter months, the sled hill and outdoor skating rink are enjoyed by kids of all ages. A full range of athletic and artistic programs round out the park district’s offerings.
